At the end of 2023, the Swedish Association of Road Transport Companies (Sveriges Åkeriföretag), together with road transport industry organisations across the Nordic countries, conducted a comprehensive survey among their member companies to assess the need for truck parking areas, rest areas, and trailer exchange (drop-and-swap) facilities for commercial heavy goods transport.

The survey received responses from 664 transport companies across the Nordic region, providing a broad overview of the current challenges.

Key Findings

• 93% said that the current number of truck parking spaces and trailer exchange facilities does not meet their operational needs.
• 91% reported that it is difficult or very difficult to find suitable parking when transporting oversized or abnormal loads.
• 63% stated that complying with EU driving and rest time regulations is difficult because of the lack of suitable parking facilities along the road network.
• 82% want larger truck parking areas.
• 57% want longer parking bays.
• 54% want wider parking bays.
• 57% want clearer separation between heavy trucks and passenger vehicles.
• 37% reported experiencing theft at a parking area within the past three years.

More Than Just Parking

The survey also highlights a strong demand for improved roadside services, including:

• Food and dining facilities
• Convenience stores or kiosks
• Showers
• Toilets

These services are considered essential for drivers during mandatory breaks and daily rest periods. Respondents also emphasised the growing need for expanded electric charging infrastructure to support the transition to zero-emission heavy vehicles.

Industry Calls for Coordinated Action

Peter Svensson, Head of Technology and Infrastructure at the Swedish Association of Road Transport Companies, commented:

“This issue has been neglected for far too long. A comprehensive approach and better coordination between stakeholders are now required to meet the needs of both drivers and the transport industry.”

He called for closer cooperation between national road authorities, municipalities, and private industry to develop more truck parking facilities with appropriate services. The Association also argues that private investment will be essential to deliver secure parking with modern amenities—benefiting drivers while improving road safety and helping to prevent cargo crime.
