The European Secure Parking Organisation (ESPORG) recently presented the findings of a new EU study on Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas (SSTPAs), commissioned by the European Commission, at three key meetings in Brussels:
- European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN)
- EU Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee for Road Transport
- EU Expert Group on Land Transport Security (LANDSEC)
Key Findings of the Study
The study concludes that the European Union currently faces a shortage of more than 390,000 secure truck parking spaces. If no additional measures are taken, this deficit is projected to increase to 483,000 spaces by 2040.
ESPORG’s Recommendations
ESPORG urged Members of the European Parliament to support:
- The expansion of certified Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas (SSTPAs)
- Digital platforms providing EU-harmonised parking information
- Stronger political support for truck drivers’ safety and well-being
ESPORG Secretary General Dirk Penasse emphasised that the lack of certified parking facilities not only negatively affects drivers’ working conditions but also creates significant security risks, including cargo theft and unauthorised access.
